With more than 4,500 companies exhibiting and over 188,000 attendees, the world’s largest tech show – CES 2019 – once again returned to Las Vegas last week (8-11 January), to show off the latest tech offerings from the electronics industry.
From a sleep robot, to the world’s first folding smartphone, there were several innovations which particularly stood out at this year’s show.
With this in mind, here’s our round-up of the top 5 tech from CES 2019:
1. Somnox’s “Sleep Robot”
Billed as the world’s first sleep robot, this peanut-shaped device also doubles up as a pillow. However, this clever device – which comes fitted with an accelerometer, an audio sensor and a carbon dioxide sensor – is much more than that. When cuddled against user’s chests, the device is able to automatically synchronize breathing to that of the sleep robot – resulting in better sleep quality.
2. Royole FlexPai – a foldable smartphone
The world’s first foldable smartphone was unveiled last week at CES 2019 by the Chinese company, Royole. The FlexPai has a bendable AMOLED display; which, according to its designers, makes the screen “virtually unbreakable”, as well as two cameras and a powerful 3970mAh battery.
While the engineering concept of the phone is certainly impressive, the phone received mixed reviews for its user experience, making it difficult to determine whether it’ll be a hit with everyday smartphone users.
3. Sony’s AIBO robot puppy
AIBO certainly isn’t new, but the vamped-up pooch from Sony received a lot of attention from attendees at CES. Just like an actual puppy, the rebooted AIBO can feel and express emotions, as well as recognise its owner, just without the mess!
4. Impossible burger 2.0
A burger may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of CES, but for many it was the standout product of the show. Impossible Burger 2.0 contains no gluten, no animal hormones and no antibiotics and is made entirely from plant-based ingredients. The burger picked up several awards at the show, including “best in show”.
5. LG’s 88-inch 8K OLED TV
TV tech is always a hot topic at CES and this year it was LG that impressed crowds with their 88 inch 8K OLED TV – a TV which has a resolution of approximately 8,000 pixels. While the TV is still very much in the early stage, viewers were particularly impressed by the size of the device, as well as offering us a small insight into what the future of 8K TV may look like.
Once again, CES managed to excite many with the possibilities of future tech in the consumer electronics industry, but as always, it’s difficult to predict how many will actually successfully make it onto the mainstream market. We’ll be sure to keep you updated with the latest!
