It proved to be a special night at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth on Saturday 14th March, as Soumac proudly sponsored the boxing night that was held in honour of Oakley Waterman and the charity that his parents now run in his memory.
It was during a brief respite from treatment for a rare form of cancer that Oakley Waterman expressed his wish for families in similar situations to his own to have a chance at spending time with their loved ones whilst making long-lasting memories. His parents are honouring that wish, through the Oakley Waterman Caravan Foundation, set up nearly a decade ago. Since then, the charity has helped nearly 1000 families. In order to raise money to support families, the charity has been behind a vast array of challenges and wild & wacky activities. The Portsmouth boxing night was one of these.
A group of individuals, ranging from ex-professional footballers to those who box to keep fit, dedicated their time to training for 12 weeks prior to the event with the support of professional and experienced boxers. The evening was a fantastic success and played out to a sell-out crowd of 1000 people.
On the night, around £35,000 was raised for the charity, contributing towards their £80,000 target for the year. There is still a way to go until their target is reached, so if you would like to get involved in some of the projects and events that they hold, please contact the charity at oakleywatermanevents@gmail.com, or text OBOX80 and a donation amount to 70070.
